Gospel stars poised for Freedom Concert

Several of our gospel stars have recently been getting the opportunity to rub shoulders with counterparts from abroad and some of them will show how well they can glitter at the Freedom Concert scheduled for Saturday, March 15 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Billed to perform at the concert are top Ghanaian gospel artistes; Cwesi Oteng, Mary Ghansah, Joe Mettle, Ohemaa Mercy, Francis Amo and Soul Winners.

They have experience to fall on and each of them would be standing up for the names they have made for themselves over the years.

They will feature alongside American gospel star, Fred Hammond who is  due to arrive in Accra tonight with his 10-piece band.

“Ghanaian gospel acts bring their own special flair to events which one doesn’t  find  with the foreign stars,” say the veteran songstress, Mary Ghansah.

“That’s why it’s always important to feature them even if the headline act is from abroad.”

The Freedom Concert is being organised by the Springs of Joy Ministry to complement the nation’s 57th Independence anniversary celebration.

“We don’t have any major gospel music programme to buttress the Independence Day activities and that is why we came up with the Freedom Concert to be held annually in early March,” says Chantal Yanney of the Springs of Joy Ministry.

Songwriter, vocalist, bassist, arranger, producer, Fred Hammond, is one of the prominent American artistes who have helped to give a new shine to gospel music for over  a decade now.

Widely referred to  as the ‘Babyface’ of gospel,  Hammond is well-respected in American music circles for his valuable contribution to the creation of a new genre of gospel music  christened “Urban Praise & Worship.”

As CEO of Face to Face Productions and the FHammond Music Label, Fred Hammond has served as producer on more than 80 album projects.
