Recognition is fulfilling - Mr Drew
WHILE the quick success of some artistes may make it seem like it is very easy to breakthrough in the Ghanaian music scene, the reality is completely different with many artistes still trying to hit the heights they seek.
And that is why fast-rising musician, Mr Drew is not taking for granted the recognition he is getting for his talent.
Since 2017, when he bagged first runner up honours in MTN Hitmaker Season 6 and got signed on to Kaywa’s Highly Spiritual music label, Mr. Drew has been active on the music scene releasing songs such as Simajorley and Gimme Love but it is his collaboration with label mate Krymi on their song Dw3 that has brought him attention.
In an interview with Graphic Showbiz recently, Mr Drew said it has not been easy so it is fulfilling to be recognised.
“It hasn’t been easy but it’s all about hard work. We are seeing the work speak for itself and I’m happy. It feels great to always work hard and be recognised for that,” he said.
A nominee in the Unsung category at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards in 2019, Mr Drew said he would be even more honoured should he win an award for his hard work and is looking forward to that happening soon.
After working with big acts such as Sarkodie and Stonebwoy, Mr Drew real name Andrew Nii Commey Otoo is yet to do a collaboration with female artistes and named songstress Efya and rapper Eno Barony as the two he would love to work with.
“I feel Efya has a soothing voice, she is also good at writing beautiful songs. I have been in the UK with her and I’ve seen her perform live. I like her vibe. She is like a big sister to me and though we talk, I haven’t let her know I would want to do a song with her yet. It will be great to do music with her one day.
“Also, Eno Barony is a great rapper. I believe she will give me the bars that I would want on a song. I think doing a song together with her will be great if I’m to get a female rapper on any of my upcoming projects,” he stated.
He has received a lot of backlash for his latest song Eat featuring Stonebwoy, which is a remake of Nigerian-American actor/musician, Rotimi’s song Love Riddim without permission but Mr Drew is determined to rise above the controversy and has issued an apology to Rotimi.
