Talent, social media no guarantee of success - Singer Sitso

He has been an underground act for nearly six years and after all his experiences trying to break through, Highlife artiste Sitso says he has realised that in order to succeed in the music industry, talent and social media alone are not enough.

According to Sitso, the perception that once you are talented you are good to go does not hold anymore.

“I used to believe that talent alone was enough; they say that talent is what one should work on having so usually you will hear people say this person is talented and this person is not.

“Then we were introduced to social media and people said once you get your songs there, you will be good to go which a lot of us have been doing but trust me, that is far from the truth.

“To make it in this industry, it goes beyond talent and social media. A lot of things come into play, especially working with a label. You need to get a label to work with and that will help in one being successful in this industry, “he told Graphic Showbiz recently.

Giving some insight into the role a label will play in making an artiste successful, Sitso said, “they are a team, they will help shape you, guide you and most importantly, they are financially fit for the journey.

“All you probably have to do is to just come and sing, there are some instances where there is even a songwriter available for you. These things will make you the artiste relax and deliver,” he added.

However, the Enjoin singer is not happy with the attitude of some labels. “One thing I have also realised is that some of the record labels do not outline the genre of music they want to go into so they end up signing any artiste they think will be of help to them.

“And when they do that, they try to change the artiste to suit what they want and then there is a problem. So for example, if they want an Afrobeats act, they should look out for one, it is only then can both parties have a smooth relationship.”

Sitso also advised artistes not to burn their bridges when they end relationships with their record labels.

“I do not know where to start from, I have been a victim of it a lot of times. Anytime I show interest in working with a label, I will be turned down with the excuse that this or that artiste was here and he did this and that. So I want to urge people to at least make it easier for those who will come after them,” he added.
