Achawa celebrates birthday with women prisoners

The 2014 Greater Accra representative at the Ghana’s Most Beautiful pageant, Ganyobi Achawa, has marked her 21st birthday celebration with a donation of assorted items to the Women’s wing of the Nsawam Prisons.

The items which were donated last Wednesday, consisted of drinks, sanitary items, bags of rice and other items. Achawa also spent the day interacting and partying with the inmates at the prisons.

In an interview with Showbiz, on Tuesday, Achawa said she did not see the point of holding a birthday party for only her friends, when she could be undertaking a project to benefit society and improve the lives of the less fortunate.

Achawa revealed that her visit to the Nsawam Prisons has changed her perception about the place. “I realised that there were a lot of things I didn’t know about the prisons. I noticed that the prisoners had televisions and even before I was introduced to them, they knew who I was.”

She advised the public not to discriminate against people who have spent time in prison and said some people were in prison because of no fault of theirs.

“People in prison are just like you and I and to be honest, some of us have committed the same crimes that they have, the only difference is that we haven’t been caught by the law.”

Achawa told Showbiz that she plans to undertake similar events annually with plans for a clean-up exercise scheduled for Independence Day, on March 6.

She said her focus was to promote made-in-Ghana products, since that was the pivot for accelerated national development.
