Basketmouth under fire for rude interruption

Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth, left a sour taste in the mouths of many patrons who turned up at the Accra International Conference Centre last Saturda y to watch the second edition of the Lord Of The Ribs comedy show.

Pat Thomas and his lovely daughter, Nana Yaa, were on stage thrilling the audience with good music when Basketmouth emerged from backstage, snatched the microphones from Nana Yaa and Pat Thomas and asked them to leave the stage because it was his turn to perform.

Basketmouth actually opened the drapes leading to the backstage and literally showed them, the Ghanaian highlife legend and his daughter, the exit.

The criticism that followed the act was immediate. Artswriter and entertainment pundit, Francis Doku, was among the first to share his angst on Facebook. “I have never seen anything as disrespectful. I mean imagine a comedy show in Lagos with a Nigerian legend like Sonny Ade performing and a Ghanaian comedian like DKB goes on stage, takes the mic from him and asks him to leave the stage because he had been waiting for too long”, he wrote.

Another showbiz regular, Sally Frimpong, who is fan of Basketmouth, condemned the comedian’s action on the spot describing it as “just not right”. She told Showbiz,  “No artiste can tell another artiste to exit the stage because he or she wants to perform. This cannot be accepted in Ghana. Basket Mouth, it is a no no for you”.

Speaking to Showbiz on Monday, Nana Yaa, who did not look really bothered about what took place said, “I just felt sorry for my dad who could not perform his own songs because I had the time to do mine. All the same, we had a great show and I am glad many people liked it. I will urge everyone not to make a big case out of this”.

But  Alhassan Nabil, CEO of the Event Factory, organisers of the show, told Showbiz, “I want to believe  it was  an act but if it wasn’t,  then I want to use this platform to apologise to  Pat Thomas and the daughter, Nana Yaa, and everyone who made it to the event,” he said.

Notwithstanding, the Lord Of the Ribs comedy show was a great one  by comedians DKB, Hogan, SIM Card, 2 Idiots  and Basket mouth who kept the patrons laughing throughout the night.

Beside Basketmouth, I will pick DKB as the best comedian of the night. He cracked jokes about the economy, women and had a standing ovation after his performance.

Although Basketmouth repeated most of his jokes, he got the audience laughing. He cracked jokes at Ghanaians over “dumsor” and said that Nigeria had been experiencing that much longer. He congratulated Ghanaians for being quick learners of the load shedding.

On the music side, Nana Yaa and her dad did so well. Their performance on the night was awesome especially when Nana Yaa did a rendition of his dad’s  song, Gyae Su.

Highlife artiste, Akwaboah, and his dad, Kwadwo Akwaboah, as well as Smart Nkansah had a good show on the night.
