Benin hosts re-formed women’s band

Music lovers in this country are yet to see the re-formed Dzesi  all-female band now called Women of Colour in action but  the group led by singer Della Hayes  is already pushing to make an impact on the international circuit.

The band played for the public for the first time at the just-ended  Star Integration of African Culture (SICA) arts festival in Cotonou, Benin where they reportedly made an impressive impact.

The band’s leader told Showbiz their repertoire went down well with the audience, many of whom were especially fascinated by their Happy Yourself song.

The Women of Colour comprises Della Hayes, lead vocals; Christiana Bagura,  guitar; Akwele Amedormeh, drums and percussion and Dede Kordah,  guitar.

The rest are Abigail Teye, percussion; Sarah Sarpong, keyboards; Stephanie Senyor, electric bass and Priscilla Tackie, drums and percussion.

“The song was presented alongside a well-rehearsed comic act of teaching basic English to the Francophone audience. Abigail Teye’s clever mix of traditional and contemporary African dances also delighted many people,” said Della Hayes.

She stated that several artistes from other parts of Africa at the festival expressed interest in collaborating with them in the coming months.

Back on home soil, the band is in high spirits for its first local showing at the +233 Jazz Bar and Grill in Accra on Saturday, November 29.  Patrons of the venue heard the old band on many occasions and  would definitely be tempted to compare the previous hands with the new ones.

The Bessa Band, under the leadership of keyboardist Bessa Simons, would also play on the night and  Della Hayes will do a few tracks with them.
