Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, father of popular singer Davido, has made a generous donation of 1 billion naira (GHC9,915,939.58) to the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in loving memory of his late mother, Nnena Esther Adeleke.
The Adeleke family attended a thanksgiving service in Lagos on August 18, 2024, to honour Nnena Esther Adeleke, who founded a C&S church in Ede, Osun State.

She was known as Senior Mother-in-Israel, a title now held by her daughter, Modupe Adeleke-Sanni.
The service was attended by prominent figures, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Davido . The announcement of the donation was met with cheers and celebration, but also sparked discussion on social media, with mixed reactions from netizens about the gesture.
Popular Nigerian media personality Daniel Regha has publicly criticised Davido’s father for the donation.
Daniel, known for his outspoken views, took to social media to express his disapproval of the donation.
He argued that while giving to the church is commendable, donating such a substantial amount in a country where millions are grappling with poverty and starvation is inappropriate.
“Giving to the church is fine, but donating over a billion to any church, in a country where millions are starving & struggling to survive doesn’t seem right.

“Davido’s dad should’ve used about 80% of that money to create employment opportunities,” Regha said.
The criticism has stirred different reactions online, with opinions sharply divided.
Some agree with Regha’s view, questioning the priorities of those with wealth in a nation facing economic challenges, while others defend Adeleke’s decision as a matter of personal choice and religious conviction.
One user, Watchman, responded, “For a man to give to the church, you have no idea what he has gained from fellowship there.”

Another user, HSPR, dismissed the donation as a mere show of wealth, saying, “It’s all for show off ..”
On the other hand, some took a different view. Edvin stated, “Poor people always have good opinions on everything,” implying that the criticism comes from a place of envy or lack of understanding.
Luklex added, “You’re right. A billion naira is a lot to be given to a church. Misplaced priorities.”
