Filmmaker Ato Yanney Jnr. highlights funding crisis in local film industry

Filmmaker, Ato Yanney Jnr, has said that Ghana's film industry has immense potential, but funding remains a significant hurdle, hindering production and marketing efforts.

He called for the promotion of Ghana’s cultural heritage and support for local filmmakers by showing Ghanaian films at various Ghana High Commissions and Consulates to start that revival.

“We have many of educative films both by our predecessors and new crop of filmmakers and these organisations can be used to boost the industry which is currently not where it is supposed to be,” he said.

This initiative, Ato Yanney Jnr, explained would not only promote Ghanaian cinema but also provide a platform for filmmakers to reach global audiences, fostering cultural exchange and economic growth.

“By celebrating our vibrant film industry, we can showcase Ghana's rich cultural diversity and creativity, support local talent and entrepreneurship, enhance Ghana's global reputation and soft power and create new opportunities for collaboration and partnership.

“I urge policymakers, industry stakeholders, and film enthusiasts to come together to support this initiative. By working together, we can unlock the full potential of Ghana's film industry and share our stories with the world,” he stated.

Ato Yanney Jnr is the son of the late British trained Ghanaian award winning filmmaker Ato Yanney (Snr), who directed movies such as His Majesty’s Sergeant, Genesis Chapter X, No Tears for Ananse , Death on Wheels, The Last Show and many national documentaries on national issues  to his credit.
