Folks Place hosts ATM

New entrant, Anita Oduro, must already be familiar with the difficult terrain that theatre producers have to go through to succeed in Ghana.

Last weekend when she put up her latest play, ATM, at the Folks Place of the National Theatre, she had to literally wait for her audience to turn up.

At 6p.m. on Saturday, which was the second day of staging the play, everything was set for the show but there were no patrons to watch so organisers had to delay the show and wait for people to take their seats.

Eventually, after about an hour, a few partons made their way to the venue and the curtain was raised for the show to roll. And when it did, there were very few dull moments.

The actors played their roles well making the audience laugh as they rolled out one hilarious scene after the other. Costume was appropriate and so were the different settings making the play quite engaging. It is a pity that ATM, good as it was, did not enjoy good patronage.

Written and directed by Anita Oduro, ATM is about three university graduates who could not secure jobs after completion of their education and so decided to engage in Automated Teller Machine (ATM) fraud.

The three graduates go to rural areas and take advantage of the ignorance of the folks there to defraud them by taking their ATM cards from them. This goes on until they are caught by hard working yet hilarious detectives.

In a chat with Ms Oduro after the show, she attributed the low patronage to inadequate publicity.  “We did some publicity but I believe it was not enough. You know, getting adequate publicity is quite expensive and it has not been easy getting financial support.

I entreat corporate bodies and other entities to support we the up- coming ones to encourage us to come out with more productions so as to contribute to the growth of the industry”, she added.
