Kenkeyfest launched in Accra

Though it is a traditional food of the Ga tribe, Ga Kenkey is perhaps one of the most popular food which is enjoyed by many people across the country who often eat it together.

It is in light of the spirit of togetherness kenkey fosters among people that a group of young men came together to host the maiden Kenkeyfest in 2016 to create a fun atmosphere for lovers of this maize meal.

This year’s event has been scheduled for Saturday, March 9 and activities towards it started with a press launch at the Mantse Agbonaa in Accra on Thursday.

At the press briefing, the spokesperson for the group, Mustapha Nii Okai Inusah popularly known as Attractive, said there are new additions to make this year’s event more interesting.

One of the events introduced is the Kenkey League and according to him, it is to give people the chance to be creative with how they present their cooked balls of kenkey.

“As part of preparations to make it more interesting and to attract good patronage, Kenkeyfest is participating in this year’s Let’s Cook GH, which is a month long event which starts on January 25 and ends on February 25,” he stated.

Kenkey is particularly enjoyed with ground chili pepper and a black sauce locally known as “shito.” It can, however, be served with other soups and stews and Mustapaha said the Kenkey League session would also encourage the 32 participants “to go out of the known traditional way of eating Kenkey”.

“This is one of the entertaining packages we have and we encourage Ghanaians to participate,” he stated.

He used the occasion to praise Dzifa Gomashie, actress and a former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture for supporting the festival.

“We wouldn’t have been here without the support of some individuals who helped to make our dreams real by helping us to host the first and subsequent events. It’s our prayer that Kenkeyfest will keep enjoying the support and sponsorship to help us push Ghanaian culture”.
