Thousands of mourners thronged Independence Square in Accra last Saturday to mark the one-week memorial of Ghanaian highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.
Fans, family, political leaders, and fellow musicians honoured his memory with prayers, tributes, and performances that celebrated more than three decades of his influence on Ghanaian popular culture.
Attendees danced and sang along to classics such as Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asem, and Theresa — timeless hits that shaped generations.
Dignitaries, Tributes
The event was graced by numerous high-profile personalities, underscoring the breadth of admiration the musician commanded across public life.
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo paid tribute to the late icon and hailed Daddy Lumba as one of the all-time greats of Ghanaian music.
He donated GH¢100,000 to support preparations for the final funeral rites.
Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia joined the gathering, as did the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin; a former Chief of Staff, Frema Osei-Opare, and former Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Agyapong.
Performances
The arrival of Amakye Dede drew a rousing welcome, and his spirited performance later electrified the square.
Kofi Nti and Kay Bless followed with heartfelt renditions that stirred fond memories among longtime fans.
Rapper Sarkodie, accompanied by his wife, Tracy, joined veteran greats Pat Thomas and Oheneba Kissi to salute the fallen star.
The Creative Arts Agency collaborated with the Fosu family to stage the one-week observance as part of a broader programme celebrating Daddy Lumba’s life and work.
The family indicated that a date for the burial in Kumasi would be announced after consultations are concluded.
Daddy Lumba died on July 26, 2025, at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments after a short illness.
He was 60. He was born on September 29, 1964, at Nsuta in the Ashanti Region.
