Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has revealed that he once borrowed money to sustain a luxurious lifestyle, admitting that he prioritised appearances over financial wisdom before changing his outlook on life.
In a recent episode of the MENtality Podcast, the actor said he had previously taken out loans to fund expensive fashion purchases and other luxury items, but eventually realised that the pursuit of material possessions was driven more by external pressure than by genuine fulfilment.
“There will always be a newer watch, a newer car,” Timini said.
Recalling one of his biggest spending habits, the actor disclosed that he owned an extensive perfume collection before recognising how much wealth he could have built instead.
“I used to be a perfume collector. I had about 150. But I realised that I could have invested the money I spent acquiring perfumes in purchasing land.”
While clarifying that he is not opposed to owning luxury items, Timini urged people to examine their motivations honestly.
“I’m not trying to talk down on having a nice car or watch. But are you doing it for yourself or because of peer pressure? Are you genuinely happy with it? And without it, would you still be happy?” he asked.
The actor also reflected on his personal journey with money, revealing that happiness does not always depend on financial status.
“There are times when I have been broken, but my energy is always the same because I found a way to be happy with whatever I have.”
Encouraging people to embrace both life’s highs and lows, Timini warned against pretending to live a perfect life for social media.
“There will be bad and good days. If you dwell on the bad days and you can’t find yourself, you can’t step out or create content, that means you are living a lie. And I wonder how long you can live that lie.”
He concluded with a candid admission about his past.
“I used to be that guy who lived a fake life and borrowed to impress people. But not anymore.”
