An amount of Gh¢6,000 was last week given out by the national executive of the Musician’s Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) to about 50 elderly musicians from different parts of the country.
The money was raised by MUSIGA through its Ageing Musicians Welfare Fund (AMWEF) which was launched in Accra last August.
A statement from MUSIGA signed by its National Welfare Officer, J.V Owusu said veteran highlife musician, Nana Kwame Ampadu, thanked the MUSIGA executive for establishing AMWEF at a ceremony in Accra to distribute cheques to some of the beneficiaries.
AMWEF was set up as part of the AJUMAPA vision of the current MUSIGA president, Bice Osei Kuffour. It aims to raise funds to support elderly musicians.
“The fund will make periodic financial distributions to support qualified musicians above sixty years and disabled ones in times of need,” the MUSIGA statement said.
The money distribution covered beneficiaries from Greater Accra, Volta, Eastern, Western and Central regions. The Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions are expected to receive their due soon.
The MUSIGA president, Bice Osei Kuffour said at the cheque distribution ceremony that his outfit was grateful to organications that have so far supported AMWEF and urged others to emulate their example.
He congratulated the elder musicians for their contribution to society and urged them to continue to be mentors of the upcoming generation.
Elderly musicians present at the cheque distribution ceremony included P.K Yamoah, A.K Yeboah, Rev Sam Cooper and Kwabena Donkor.
