Reggae artiste Osagyefo is set to headline this year’s Kwame Nkrumah Reggae Festival, an event celebrating the legacy of Ghana’s first President and his contribution to African liberation and unity.
The festival will take place on Saturday, September 26, at the Gold Coast Restaurant and Lounge in Cantonments, Accra, and will run from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.
Organised by Reggae Network Ghana, the festival will feature Osagyefo alongside some of Ghana’s well-known Reggae artistes, including Royal Souljah, Ras Boomba, Kojo Kombolo and Nana Ntow, as well as other performers expected to contribute to the celebration.
The night will also feature performances backed by the Nananom Band and Taking Over Band, promising patrons an evening of live Reggae music.
Speaking with Graphic Showbiz on Monday, September 21, Osagyefo said the festival was an opportunity to connect Reggae’s socially conscious tradition with the legacy of Ghana’s first President.
“My music is known for its socially conscious themes so the festival offers another platform to connect Reggae with issues of African identity and consciousness.
“The Kwame Nkrumah Reggae Festival is expected to attract Reggae enthusiasts and patrons interested in celebrating the former President’s legacy through live music,” he said.
The festival is being positioned as more than a night of music and entertainment, with organisers seeking to highlight Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana’s independence and his wider vision for African unity.
Nkrumah led Ghana to independence from British colonial rule in 1957 and became a major voice in the liberation struggle across Africa. He strongly advocated African unity and supported independence movements across the continent.
Also, Reggae music has long been associated with messages of freedom, justice, resistance, equality, African consciousness and social change. Its connection with Pan-African thought has also made it an important musical expression of the African liberation experience.
Through the festival, Reggae Network Ghana hopes to connect Nkrumah’s historic contribution with the messages that have made Reggae influential across Africa and the African diaspora.
