Poetry, music, film night for Ali at Gold Coast

The late boxing legend, Muhammad Ali, was a poet in his own right and a tribute night in his honour at the Gold Coast Restaurant, near the Nyaho Medical Centre in Accra tomorrow, June 18, will feature poetry from Chief Moomen and Poetra.

Referred to by many as the Louisville Lip, Ali had a way with words that few sports journalists have come close to rivalling.

For many years, journalists  found it hard  trying to out-word the boxer, given that he usually did a far better job of describing himself or his opponents than they could.

Selecting the best of quotes from the millions of words Ali uttered at lightning speed during his illustrious career has always been a challenge.  Chief Moomen and Poetra are, however, poised to work some magic with some of the best known, along with a few less-known, in addition to their own creative pieces for the great boxer.

The 7.00p.m. event will also feature deejay mixes of music from the 1960s through to the 1980s.

Ali was in Ghana for a two-week visit in May, 1964. He visited several other African countries as well and the famous 1974 Rumble in the Jungle fight happened in Zaire (now DR Congo). The Gold Coast tribute night will, therefore, include film clips of some of the time Ali spent in Africa.

Lawyer and broadcaster, Moses Foh-Amoaning and sports journalists, Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah and Nathaniel Attoh, will also be around to give some insights into the life of Ali.

“It promises to be an exciting night of tributes to the man who claimed he handcuffed lightning and was so mean, he made medicine sick,” a spokesperson for Gold Coast Restaurant said to The Mirror.
