(VIDEO)Esther Smith reveals 'Nsuro' draws inspiration from Shaggy's classic hit 'Angel'

Ghanaian gospel legend Esther Smith spills the tea on her hit song 'Nsuro'. She reveals it was actually inspired by Jamaican/American Shaggy's iconic 'Angel' featuring Rayvon.

In a chat with blogger Kobby Kyei, Esther shared how she found spiritual vibes in the song's melody and structure, despite its secular origins.

Esther Smith attributes the inspiration for her song "Nsuro" to the musical composition of Shaggy's "Angel", specifically highlighting the song's string arrangement as the catalyst. She emphasizes that spiritual alignment can facilitate inspiration from diverse sources

“There’s a guy called Shaggy. I got my song from his song ‘Girl, you’re my angel, you’re my darling angel.’ The cord or string of that song motivated my song — ‘Nsuro wai, nsuro wai, nsuro nea otamfo bɛyɛ.’ That’s where I got my song,” she said.

Esther Smith attributes her distinctiveness during her career peak, amidst a plethora of releases from her contemporaries, to her emphasis on prayer and in-depth biblical study.

According to the Nyame Aguanma hit-maker, she prioritized spiritual guidance, refraining from rushing song releases without seeking divine direction

Esther Smith reveals that her songwriting process is a divine experience, where songs come to her fully formed in her mind without manual writing.

She attributes this to a direct encounter with the Holy Spirit, stating that none of her songs across ten albums were written traditionally with pen and paper.

A household name in gospel music, Esther has many awards to her credit including Gospel Album of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year and Best Female Vocal Performance of the Year in 2003 at the Ghana Music Awards.
