VIDEO: Kirk Franklin reveals why he hasn't spoken to his biological mother in 20 years
Grammy-winning gospel singer Kirk Franklin has opened up about the painful experience that led him to sever ties with his biological mother two decades ago. Speaking on the “Funky Friday” podcast, Franklin shared the heart-wrenching story that unfolded during a family intervention when he was 32 years old.
The intervention was organized to support his sister, who had recently been released from prison and was struggling with drug addiction. Franklin explained that he was the only one actively trying to help her, despite feeling overwhelmed by the situation.

During the intervention, Franklin’s mother introduced her new husband. Although the meeting seemed to be going well, it took a dramatic turn when Franklin's mother chose to leave with her husband rather than stay and support her children.
“For the first time, I’m going to tell this story. This is why I stopped talking to my biological mother,” Franklin began. He recounted how, after a heated argument with his mother’s new husband, his mother chose to walk out of the house with him, leaving Franklin and his sister behind.
Franklin expressed the deep hurt he felt when his mother sided with her husband instead of staying with her children, who she had not raised or nurtured. “She took that man’s hand and walked out with him,” Franklin said. “And I promised myself that as a little boy I couldn’t protect myself, but as a grown man, I would never be put in a position where you would treat me like that again.”
The gospel singer’s revelation sheds light on the emotional scars that led to his decision to cut off contact with his mother, a decision that has endured for 20 years.
