Enhancing motorbike registration, surveillance, step towards security

Ghana has seen a significant rise in the use of motorbikes as a mode of transportation,in both urban and rural areas.

However, this increase has also led to concerns about road safety and security.

To address these concerns, it is essential to ensure that all motorbikes are registered, particularly in areas with high crime rates.

According to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) Act, 2008 (Act 761), all motorbikes in Ghana are required to be registered before they can be used on the roads.

The registration process involves providing proof of ownership, insurance and a valid driver's licence.

Unfortunately, many motorbikes are not registered, making it challenging for authorities to track and monitor their movements.

To enhance security and monitoring, the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in enclaves of motorcycle activities across the country is needed.

This would enable law enforcement agencies to monitor the movements of motorbikes and other vehicles.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) regulates the installation and use of CCTV cameras in Ghana and, as such, must liaise with the relevant bodies to realise this.

The DVLA should intensify efforts to register all motorbikes, particularly in areas with low registration rates.

Public awareness campaigns should be conducted to educate motorbike owners and riders about the importance of registration and the benefits of CCTV surveillance.

By these measures, Ghana can enhance road safety and security, reduce crime and promote a more responsible and law-abiding motorbike culture.
