Who checks the formation of churches?

It is a fact that Ghana's Constitution guarantees freedom of worship. There is no doubt about that, so it is nobody's concern whether one worships Jesus, the Holy Ghost, a Saint, a tree or even air.

However, the pace at which spiritual churches have been springing up here and there in the country recently is something that clearly calls for a second thought before one can wisely decide which church one should register one's faith.

This has become important because most of these churches are merely ''wolves in lamb's skin'' seeking nothing but their own selfish ends, but that does not mean that we don't have genuine churches among them.

Moreover, some of the leaders/pastors or priests of these ever-increasing churches are nothing short of ''desperate crooks'' who by complicated dishonest dexterity, live in mansions at the expense of their poor and innocent followers, hence the Bible warns us against these false churches.

Though the Constitution allows freedom of worship, this should not be a license to cheat or mislead innocent followers, a reason why some years ago during the presidency of Jerry John Rawlings during the PNDC era, he banned a certain church at Dzorwulu in Accra for misquoting the Bible. The leader of the said church at that time called himself ''Jesus'' and ''God'' at times, prompting the public to call on the then government to close down the said church, which was done.

The question which remains unanswered and keeps on bugging my mind is: Is there not a body or an institution which sees to the formation of churches in the country?
