The destruction of property is a criminal offence... We have directed the police to ensure that all such cases reach the courts and that those responsible answer for their actions. "
He appealed to people to work together "to find solutions to the challenge of student funding and access".
South Africa has been hit by a week of protests following a government announcement that universities could raise tuition fees by a maximum of 8%.
