Shots fired outside Thai election meeting

At least two people were injured in gunfire outside an army venue where Thailand's prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, was holding meetings with the country's election commission.

About 500 protesters surrounded the base in north Bangkok on Tuesday, as Yingluck discussed the proposed poll at the weekend.

"Two people were hurt", said Chumpol Jumsai, an anti-government protest leader who was at the facility.

"Someone fired shots. One protester was hurt and the man who fired the shots was hurt, too. They have been sent to different hospitals," Chumpol told the Reuters news agency.

Thailand's capital has been gripped by protests seeking to disrupt February's general election.

Yingluck was meeting members of the country's Election Commission on Tuesday over the possibility of postponing a general election set for February 2.

The commission wants a delay, saying the country is too unstable to hold an election.

On Sunday, one protester was shot dead in a clash as protesters swarmed dozens of polling stations to stop advance voting for Sunday's election.

The protesters are demanding Yingluck's resignation to make way for an appointed government to implement reforms to fight corruption.
