US Army increases maximum enlistment age to 42

The United States Army has raised the maximum enlistment age to 42, marking a significant policy shift aimed at broadening its recruitment base amid evolving global security demands.

The change, captured in a revised Army Regulation 601-210 released on March 20, will take effect from April 20. It replaces the previous upper age limit of 35 for enlistment into the Regular Army, the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve.

Under the new policy, the minimum enlistment age remains 18, although 17-year-olds may still sign up with parental consent.

The updated regulation also introduces changes to eligibility criteria, allowing prospective recruits with a single conviction for marijuana possession or possession of drug paraphernalia to enlist without requiring a waiver.

The move is seen as part of efforts to remove barriers to entry while maintaining overall recruitment standards.

Officials say the revision aligns the Army with broader Department of Defense standards and brings it in line with other branches of the US military. The United States Air Force and United States Space Force raised their enlistment age limits to 42 in 2023, while the United States Navy set its cap at 41 in 2022. The United States Marine Corps remains an outlier, maintaining a maximum enlistment age of 28.

The latest adjustment marks the second time in two decades that the Army has expanded its enlistment age to 42. A similar move was made during the mid-2000s at the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, before the cap was reduced again to 35 in 2016.

While the Army has not explicitly linked the decision to a single factor, the revision comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and increased demand for personnel across the US military.

The expansion is expected to open the door for a wider pool of applicants, including older individuals seeking to join the armed forces, as the Army adapts its recruitment strategy to meet current operational needs.
