VIDEO: Donald Trump says Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are mentally impaired

Former US President Donald Trump escalated his racially charged rhetoric on Saturday, targeting Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and illegal immigrants as he continues his bid to regain the White House.

Speaking at a rally in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin on Saturday, Trump called Harris "mentally impaired" and claimed illegal immigrants are threatening the safety of ordinary Americans, accusing them of seeking to "cut the throats" of citizens in their homes.

Trump’s remarks followed Harris's visit to the US-Mexico border on Friday, where she pledged to strengthen efforts to manage asylum claims and reduce illegal crossings—an area in which polling shows she faces particular challenges. Trump dismissed her efforts, telling his supporters that President Joe Biden and Harris were responsible for an "invasion" of violent criminals into the country.

"Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way," Trump said, adding, "Only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country."

The former president's harsh tone on immigration, a hallmark of his political campaigns since 2016, has become more extreme in the lead-up to the November 2024 election, as he seeks to galvanize support in predominantly white, economically struggling parts of the US. Flanked by large mugshots of migrants accused of crimes, Trump painted a grim picture of the country, claiming migrants will "walk into your kitchen, they'll cut your throat," despite reports of a decrease in illegal border crossings and a significant decline in crime rates across the US.

Trump, 78, also attacked Harris, 59, calling her "dumb" and accusing her of lying in her remarks at the border. He took aim at the media, specifically criticizing Fox News for airing Harris's speech, which he described as dishonest. "They shouldn't be allowed to put it on," he said.

Harris, meanwhile, was in San Francisco at a fundraising event, where she downplayed Trump's attacks. "This election is about two very different visions for our nation, and we see that contrast on the campaign trail," she said, accusing Trump of recycling "the same tired playbook we've heard for years."

At one point during his speech, Trump appeared to acknowledge the dark tone of his remarks, pausing to quip, "Isn't this a wonderful and inspiring speech? I've got people sitting in the front row going 'oh my God.' This is a dark speech."

Despite his fiery rhetoric, Trump remains a central figure in the Republican Party, even as he faces multiple ongoing legal challenges, including being the first major presidential candidate in US history to be a convicted felon. As the election draws nearer, his inflammatory language on immigration continues to resonate with his core base, though it further deepens divisions in the country’s political landscape.
