Double Duo wins ‘Amazing Child’ contest

The fourth edition of TV Africa’s programme, Amazing Child, roared to a shattering climax last Sunday at the National Theatre, Accra, after weeks of very powerful studio performances during which school children, mostly from basic schools, displayed what one parent described as “unbelievable insights” into African culture and history.

So competitive was the grand finale that three-quarters of the way through the contest, it was difficult to tell one performance from the other in terms of the quality of dances, drama and singing.

Ultimately, however, the panel of judges, including Doris Ansah, Akosua Agyepong and last year’s winner of the programme, picked out Double Duo, a group of two boys, both aged 12 from Lester International School, as the overall winners, going home with a cash prize of GH¢2,000.

Larteley Larkai, 12, from Peaceland Academy was the first runner-up, followed by J. A Dancers, a group made up of two girls and one boy.

In addition to the ultimate diadem, Double Duo also emerged as the Most Creative Participants.

The judges decided on 12 year-old Akosua Ameyaw, of Japs Prep & JHS School as the Most Improved Participant, having bettered her act consistently from the beginning of the competitive to the end;  Larteley Larkai won the Most Disciplined Participant and Abena Osei Korankye of  Shine Education Centre as the  Most Ghanaian and African Oriented Participant.

Amazing Child, created by Kwaw Ansah, Ghana’s most notable filmmaker and TV Africa’s CEO, is designed to shape the talents of Ghanaian children in the spirit of projecting African values so that they would grow into confident adults equipped and ready to change their world for the better.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, and the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms Dzifa Gomashie, evidently impressed by the high standard of performances, promised to put their heads together to see how the two ministries could be of support to the programme.
