311 hearing, visually-impaired candidates to write BECE

A total of 311 final-year junior high school students (JHS) with disabilities will take part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The students are 285 hearing and 57 visually impaired as well as 11 dumb candidates. They are among a total of 468,053 candidates from 15,185 public and private schools that will be writing the examination this year.  The number consists of 241,148 males and 226,905 females.

The examination will be written at 1,702 centres across the country. During the examination, there would be 1,702 supervisors, 1,548 assistant supervisors and 16,410 invigilators.

According to statistics made available to the Junior Graphic by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Ashanti Region will again present the highest number of 93,570 candidates made up of 47,702 males and 45,868 females.

The Greater Accra Region follows with 85,041 candidates; 41,022 males and 44,019 females while the Central Region, which has some of the popular senior high schools in the country recording the third highest number of 50,106 candidates comprising 25,934 males and 24,172 females. 

The Western Region would be presenting 47,467 candidates:24,779 males and 22,688 females. The Eastern Region would have 44,319 candidates:23,311 males and 21,008 females with the Brong Ahafo Region, presenting 43,744 made up of 23,311 males and 20,433 females. 

Northern Region has 38,975 candidates :21,506 males and 17,469 females while the Volta Region presents 32,907: 17,567 males and 15,340 females.

The Upper East and the Upper West regions have 19,873 (9,820 males and 10,053 females) and 12,051 (6,196 males and 5,855 females) candidates respectively.

A total of  199,059 candidates will write French while 453,654 will write Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
