The contest, which was on the theme: “Wisdom Time” was aimed at assisting the pupils to develop reading skills and habits, and build their confidence and knowledge.

Students from Primary One to Junior High School provided summaries of selected story books they had read.

A panel of judges tested the participants through spelling, pronunciations, punctuations and confidence.

Parents of the contestants were also present to narrate their respective roles in developing their wards’ skills.

It was an exciting event as participants exhibited brilliance in their attempt to win the approval of the judges as well as the admiration of the audience.

The Executive Manager of TLS, Mr Kweku Anin Adjekum, said the ‘Wisdom Time’ concept was initiated by the Director of Schools and Project of the Lutheran Schools, Ghana, Mr Kwadwo Gyamfi, to help arrest the lack of interest in reading among students.

“We have observed that children nowadays find it difficult to read their own notes let alone story books. This competition is meant to motivate them to read,” he said.

Mr Adjekum said each term the competition was organised in the various classes after which the finalists were selected and the best ones awarded according to the skills exhibited through their correct summary of the selected books.

He called on parents to mentor their wards to improve on their reading skills.

The Director of Schools and Projects of the Lutheran Schools, Mr Kwadwo Gyamfi, in a speech read on his behalf by Mr Samuel Ala Adjetey, said the Lutheran School would continue to be the centre of academic excellence as well as competitive.

The director of schools and projects commended the teachers, pupils and parents for their respective roles in making the day very successful.

He announced plans by the management of the school to encourage the effective use of ICT to support and change the teaching and learning processes and make academic work fun.

Ms Emma Dzokoto, the acting Academic Affairs Director of the Lutheran Schools, said the programme was initiated not only to help improve on the reading skills of the pupils but also help them think critically and be analytical.
