The African Child School and the Sound Foundation School received 1000 and 500 litre tanks respectively as their prizes.

The competition was organised by the Global Youth in Environmental Sustenance (G-YES), a non-governmental organisation to inculcate the habit of planting trees among schoolchildren.

The African Child School was successful in planting six trees, while the Sound Foundation School planted four.

The Chairperson of the planning committee, Mrs Adwoa Dako, said the initiative by G-YES fell within the committee’s aim of planting trees to check the current rate of reduction in fresh water sources, pointing out that encouraging children to nurture trees is important for the future.

Mrs Dako congratulated the schools for putting in efforts to nurture the trees till they grew.

“This should tell you that hard work pays, it is your hard work that has attracted us to give you these water tanks.”

Speaking to the Junior Graphic, the Chief Executive Officer of G-YES, Mr Dieudonne Kwame Agudah, called on the government and other institutions to support this initiative as it helped meet the country’s goals towards climate change.

“We were only able to involve three schools with two successfully nurturing their trees because of the lack of funds. This tree-planting competition was made possible by the kind assistance of the Forestry Commission which provided us with the seedlings.”

A student of the African Child School, Steven Peprah expressed gratitude to the G-YES, saying that, “ I think this is a very good initiative even though I am not part of the Eco Club that took part in the tree-planting exercise.”
