Meet winner of 2025 Wear University of Ghana Day fashion contest

A principal library assistant at the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Ghana (UG), Baba Hamidu emerged the winner of the 2025 Wear UG Day fashion contest.

He earned the top honours in the competition that featured 14 contestants.

Hamidu’s winning outfit, was inspired by the regal elegance of a Dagbon king, which captured the essence of royalty, power, and cultural pride.

His ensemble portrayed a ruler commanding vast territories, blending tradition with contemporary style to make a bold fashion statement.

In an interview with the campus portal Univers News, Hamidu reflected on his journey, attributing his success to perseverance, creativity, and faith.

“I’m grateful to Almighty Allah for this opportunity. It hasn’t been easy — it’s been tiring yet fulfilling. This dream of showcasing my talent has been with me since I entered the University of Ghana. I’ve always wanted the world to see my craft, and God has made it possible today."

"I’m so proud to have won and deeply appreciate everyone who supported me with words of encouragement and presence. This win is for us all,” he said.

Describing the victory as a significant step toward his dream of becoming a professional fashion designer, Hamidu expressed his openness to future opportunities.

“I need to show my talent, so I’m ever ready to partner with anyone who wants to sign me up,” he added.

For his exceptional performance, Hamidu received a cash prize of GHS 2,000, a certificate of recognition, and a variety of gifts from the event’s sponsors.
