The West Hills Mall in Accra came alive with the sights, sounds, and aromas of Ghanaian cuisine on Saturday, June 15, as families gathered to celebrate Father’s Day at the mall’s much-anticipated “King of the Grill” Cook-Off.
Organised in partnership with Pluzz 89.9FM, the event transformed the mall’s forecourt into a vibrant space of culinary delight, where fathers teamed up with their children and friends to compete in a spirited cooking contest. The celebration brought together a diverse crowd of food lovers and community members, all united in honouring fatherhood through the shared joy of food and family.
Participants showcased some of Ghana’s most iconic dishes, from sizzling grills to bubbling pots of stew. As the flavours filled the air, the atmosphere was equally rich with laughter, teamwork, and friendly rivalry. The event was a fusion of culinary passion and community bonding, leaving a lasting impression on both guests and competitors.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Marketing Manager for West Hills Mall, Wendy Aryee, expressed her satisfaction with the turnout and energy on the day. “We are thrilled with the overwhelming response to this year’s ‘King of the Grill’ Cook-Off. Our goal was to create a fun and engaging space where families could come together to celebrate Father’s Day through the joy of cooking and community, and we’re glad to have been able to achieve that, taking a cue from the passion, creativity and smiles shared by the participants,” she said.
The day’s festivities were elevated by a high-energy performance from Ghanaian music star Tulenkey, whose dynamic stage presence kept the crowd dancing and added to the festive spirit.
In a close and flavourful contest, Abraham Bryan Junior from S.C.C was crowned the overall winner after impressing the judges with his expertly prepared fufu with ebunuebunu. Second place went to Red Top’s Edem Reuben and Kenclark Adwadzie for their beautifully presented banku with okro stew, while Gloria Afua Nyamedo from Kwabenya clinched third with her vibrant waakye served with shito and stew. Eleven-year-old Zoey Hyford earned a standing ovation for her fourth-place finish, serving up an impressive jollof rice with chicken and coleslaw that wowed both judges and spectators.
The 2025 edition of the “King of the Grill” Cook-Off was supported by a host of partners, including Sonotech, Tasty Tom, Decathlon, Eazzy Cuisine, Onga, Twisco, and Lyzy Tomato Mix, all contributing to the success of the community-centred event.
As the day drew to a close, organisers and participants alike looked forward to an even more exciting edition in 2026. “The smiles, the flavours, and the family moments are what make this event special,” Ms Aryee noted. “We can’t wait to do it all over again next year.”
