Rev Abena Tay's 'Surviving the Mood': Faith, hope drive mental health night
It was an evening of healing, music and hope as Abenatay Ministries, in partnership with the Mental Health Authority hosted “Surviving the Mood”, a mental health awareness night on bipolar disorder and other mood-related conditions.
It was held at the Tang Palace Hotel in Accra on July 20, 2025 and featured activities including mental health talks, survivor testimonies, musical performances, an award ceremony, a commemorative dinner and fundraising efforts to support mental health advocacy.
As mental health professionals explained the symptoms, challenges and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, survivors shared their personal journeys.
“I have battled with bipolar disorder for 10 years. Initially, I didn’t know and blamed it on my personality whenever I had mood swings or my inferiority complex worsened. It was only when I received a proper diagnosis and finally got the support I needed, that I was able to live a normal and stable life,” a survivor, Esenam Abrah Drah expressed.
She added that the only way to battle the condition is to be disciplined and consistent with medications such as mood stabilisers.
Attendees were encouraged to break the silence surrounding mental health, educate themselves and seek support when needed.
To lighten the mood, artistes such as ‘Nsuromaa’ delivered a lyrical session. Individuals and organisations were also recognised for their contribution to mental health awareness and philanthropic works in the country.
It also featured a fundraising session, with proceeds going towards community outreach and mental health support initiatives under the AbenaTay Foundation.
Hostess of the evening, Rev Tay, commended the collaborative efforts of all partners and urged the government to continue prioritising mental well-being.
“Mental health is not just a personal issue. It is a community responsibility. Tonight proves that healing is possible when we come together,” she said.
