It’s an interesting change to see things from your spouse’s perspective.

7 Major ways in which marriage changes you as a person

‘So how does it feel being married and all?’ is the question I've been asked by almost every person I've met since I, well, got married last month. I sum it up with a quick ‘wonderful’, constantly thinking about how there's much more to it than just that.

For someone who is fiercely independent, marriage will come across as a speed breaker that will indicate to you the need to slow down, since there’s now someone sitting pillion and you need to drive carefully. Like the first couple of days when we'd eat at a new place, I would get my wallet out every time, forgetting that it wasn’t ‘my’ money anymore but ‘our’ money. Marriage is all about that remembrance.

It’s hell lot of different than dating

There will be times when you smile, get surprised, and sometimes even annoyed, after realising how different things get after tying the knot. Spending 6-7 hours with a person is way different from staying with the person under one roof. Although you know the person in and out, you’re still in for mild surprises that could make you raise your eyebrows, purse your lips, smile and bicker. Marriage is all about how you take in those surprises without making them a big deal.

The ‘other’ perspective will be an eye-opener

It’s an interesting change to see things from your spouse’s perspective. And it helps when they see the glass half full or when you make them see it full. It’s all about respecting those different views and takes.

Time moves a lot differently

Every single day, you're wondering how you made it to where you are today. From changing trains to catching a glimpse of each other to sitting next to each other, quietly sipping tea, it feels like you’ve passed a hundred lifetimes to get where you are. With marriage, time flies and how!

You will fight differently

Since you both know there is no ‘walking out’, you watch your tongues. And even if the fight is terrible, you eventually forget about it.

You feel like you're living with a roommate

With increasing rents and decreasing spaces, millennial marriages are compelled to not be like typical marriages. Like I still feel like I'm staying with a male roommate, hanging out with him. Distribution of chores is making both our lives easier and cordial, and it's helping us work as a team.

You will see the future

together It’s commendable how you can now manage to curb frivolous expenses. Spending will now be turned into savings. With dreams of building an empire, the future is to be taken seriously and not to be messed with.

And the most important realisation of it all is the meaning of marriage IMO

Giving selflessly and not expecting anything in return is what marriage is all about. When both partners realise this, you both know you’re on the right page.
