Police uncover inside job in Jukwa gold robbery; driver, guard nabbed

The Police have arrested three suspects in connection with a gold robbery that occurred near Jukwa, close to Afransie in the Western Region, describing the incident as an inside job involving members of the transport crew.

The robbery took place on July 15, 2025, when a Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GT 7426-23, transporting gold concentrate from a mining site to Wassa Akropong, was attacked along the Jukwa road.

The vehicle was occupied by the assigned driver, Mr Kofi Gyamfi, a security guard identified only as Bashiru, and one other individual.

According to initial police reports, the incident was not a random act. Officers from the Western Central Regional Command, who responded promptly, arrested a suspect at the scene, Mr Foster Peprah, a small-scale miner.

Police investigators say Mr Gyamfi recruited him to execute the robbery.

During interrogation, Mr Peprah told police he conspired with another man, known only as Isaac, who is currently on the run. He also revealed that Mr Gyamfi, the official driver, arranged their access and timing.

Following this disclosure, police arrested Mr Gyamfi, who admitted his role in the crime and named Bashiru, the onboard security guard, as the one who initiated the plan. Bashiru was later picked up from his hideout in Wassa Gyedua.

All three arrested suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with the investigation.

Police say efforts are underway to apprehend Isaac, who remains at large.

The Ghana Police Service has stated it is taking steps to improve safety along mining transport routes and to deal with individuals who use insider knowledge to stage such robberies.
