Velvet is a type of woven tufted fabric in which the cut threads are evenly distributed, with a short dense pile, giving it a distinctive soft feel.
Velvet has historically been made from silk, but can be created from a variety of fibres, such as rayon.
There are several theories as to where velvet was first invented. Though it has a strong association with European nobility, it is most commonly believed to have originated from Eastern culture.
What you have to bear in mind is that the velvet material used for furniture is not the same type of fabric used for clothes, hats, belts and shoes.
Some of the velvet materials are very hard while others are soft and glossy. Some have spandex in them which enables them to stretch.
Velvet fabric is available in many grades. You can get velvet in silk, as well synthetic bases. The ones with a synesthetic base like rayon are inexpensive.
Velvet is available in many shades of vibrant and vivid colours.
Presently, velvet scarfs are trending and they come in various bright colours. Velvet is increasingly being used for home décor, and also for making upholstery coverings and curtains.

There are various types of velvets you can purchase in town. An example is the crinkle velvet or crushed velvet. This fabric, as the name suggests, has a crushed look and it is embossed with an irregular, crumpled texture.
It has a great shimmer and visual texture which makes it a very attractive fabric for sewing. You can make scarfs or elegant evening wrap blouses. The embossed velvet has stamped designs usually floral all over.
