They also called for more cultural and educational exchanges among the two nations to foster unity and cooperation between the two countries.

The alumni made the call at the 80th-anniversary celebration of the establishment of the British Council in Ghana held at the British High Commissioner’s residence at Cantonments at Osu in Accra last Wednesday.

British High Commissioner

The British High Commissioner, Harriet Thompson, touching on the theme for the celebration, “80 years of building connections, understanding and trust; turning legacies and lessons into innovation and impact”, noted that the celebration was to enhance awareness of the British Council’s work while spotlighting the contributions of Ghanaian-UK alumni in both national and international development.

“As we celebrate 80 years of the British Council’s presence in Ghana, with respect to building connections, understanding and trust, this will strengthen the relationship between the two countries,” she noted.

She called for more collaborations between the two countries to enhance development and growth among its youth.

Laboratories for Future Leaders

The British Council Country Director, Nii Doodo Dodoo, asserted that the council was now a tool that produced young Ghanaian educated elites through exchange educational programmes with the UK for the future of Ghana.

“Each of us has come into contact with the British Council one way or the other. Since it arrived in the country in 1944, it has been pivotal in our lives either as students or in arts and cultural exhibitions,” he stated.

Dialogue series

A dialogue series on the life and experience of Ghanaian students in the UK was held. Former Ghanaian students who went through tertiary institutions in the United Kingdom (UK) expressed satisfaction and gratitude to the UK for imparting quality knowledge to them and helping them gain advanced knowledge in academia.

“I gained deeper expertise in my field of study and benefited from support networks in the United Kingdom,” Cherubim Mawuli Amenyedor, a digital and marketing strategist at Dominion University stated.

Survey

The event was also used to reveal a survey conducted by the Managing Partner of Confidential Strategies, Michael Kottoh, on behalf of the British Council, on the post-study engagements of alumni trends in Ghanaian students’ mobility from 2010 to 2020.

It revealed an increase of 47 per cent of Ghanaians sojourning in the UK for their education.

It also highlighted that 75 per cent of Ghanaian students go to the UK to undertake postgraduate courses while 73 per cent return home after studying in the UK.
