EU supports 30 Ghanaian students under Erasmus+ programme

The European Union (EU) has awarded 30 Ghanaian students scholarships to pursue postgraduate studies at top European universities under the 2025 Erasmus+ Programme.

The beneficiaries, who would depart between August and October, would be hosted in 12 European countries.

In addition, 923 Ghanaian students and university staff have been selected for international credit mobility opportunities under the scheme.

The pre-departure event was held last Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at the EU ambassador’s residence in Accra.

Competitive selection

EU Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly, congratulated the awardees, describing their selection as highly competitive.

“Your selection in this competitive programme speaks volumes about your dedication, hard work and potential,” he said.

He said that Erasmus+ was not only an academic scholarship, but also “a bridge that connects cultures, ideas and talent from across the world”.

Mr Razaaly further urged the students to approach their journey with courage and curiosity, stressing that they would be ambassadors for Ghana, Africa and the EU’s commitment to international partnerships.

Commendation

The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak, commended the EU for its longstanding partnership with Ghana’s education sector.

He recounted his experience as a beneficiary of international education, having studied at the University of Bergen in Norway.

“I can tell you that the relationships I established, the networks I built and the knowledge and skills I obtained have propelled me to who I am today,” Dr Apaak told the students.

He encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunity, immerse themselves in their host societies and return to Ghana as “agents of change and leaders.”

The Minister for Youth and Employment, George Opare Addo, urged the beneficiaries to uphold the country’s values and make the nation proud.

“You carry the hopes of a nation. Be confident, yet act and engage with integrity and humility,” he said.

He reminded the students that only 30 out of thousands of applicants were selected and charged them not to take the privilege for granted.

“Your behaviour and achievements abroad will shape perceptions and open doors for those who follow,” he said.

Background

Since 2014, more than 2,780 Ghanaian students and higher education staff have benefited from Erasmus+ opportunities, while over 2,000 Ghanaians have studied in Europe through Erasmus scholarships in the past four decades.

The EU has dedicated €26.2 billion for the programme between 2021 and 2027 under its Global Gateway initiative, with a strong focus on social inclusion, digital and green transitions and youth participation in governance.
