STEM education key feature in model schools — Education Minister

The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has revealed that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) will be the key feature of the new model schools to be established by the government before the end of the year.

He noted that STEM, as a vision of the President, would provide and promote quality education that would compete with international standards and give teachers equal comfort.

“These school blocks will not be in the traditional classroom setting. It is the President’s vision to provide good classrooms that support the STEM system and have the system where teachers have their own comfortable classrooms.

“Here, the students will come to the teacher and not the other way round. These classrooms will be equipped with ultramodern facilities that support and promote STEM education,” he revealed.

Happy dialogue

Dr Adutwum announced this at the inaugural Happy Development Dialogue, organised by a local radio station, Happy 98.9FM at the forecourt of the Ministry of Education in Accra.

Participants were drawn from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Ghana National Commission for UNESCO, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (C-TVET), National Teaching Council, Ghana Book Development Council, Ghana Library Authority and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

STEM classrooms

Dr Adutwum revealed that the classrooms for the STEM project would be fitted with smart boards and every student would have personal computers at their disposal.

“With access to ultra-modern laboratories, students will not only have practical experience but will also be exposed to critical thinking and other activities, which will level the playing field for Ghanaian students.

“This will also help build a solid foundation for the students before they transition into high school and inform their course choices in the future eventually,” he added.

Outfits of students

He disclosed that as part of the new model schools, students at the junior high level would wear white shirts and dark blue trousers with flying ties.

The uniform is to differentiate the students in the model schools from the rest of the pupils in the regular basic schools

The minister reiterated that the President’s vision of having a majority of students attain education to the tertiary level and improve education at the junior high level was exactly what the ministry sought to do.

Appreciation

He appreciated the staff and heads of various bodies under the ministry for their good works towards the attainment of their overall objectives.
