Islamic University College Ghana launches two programmes

The Islamic University College, Ghana (IUCG) has launched a Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Childhood Education programme as part of efforts to meet the demand for teachers to teach the courses.

At the launch of the two programmes in Accra last Monday, the Vice President of Academic Affairs of the university, Dr Gamel Nassir, said the programmes were also introduced in response to “a national emergency” to train teachers to enhance their competence in handling children at their various levels of education.  

“We tend to have the impression that anybody at all can be in the classroom to teach because handling children is a matter of patience and love for it, but it is very important to bear in mind that it needs professional training”, he added.

The programme

According to Dr Nassir, the newly introduced programmes were affiliated to the University of Education Winneba (UEW), which will issue certificates to graduates.

He noted that it was also part of efforts to meet the newly set standard which required universities to have a certain number of faculties in order to maintain their status.

In an address read on his behalf by the Head of Department for Education, UEW, Dr Ernest Awonta, the Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies of UEW, Professor Samuel Hayford, pledged his outfit’s support to make the programme successful.

“Acknowledging both the impact of early childhood education on the life chances of every person, and the hope of delivering quality early education in Ghana, the UEW is solidly behind you to succeed”, he said.

The spokesperson of the Council of Zongo Chiefs, Chief Imoro Baba Issah, commended the university for introducing the programme and expressed the hope that the knowledge acquired by teachers who would study those subjects would support the proper upbringing of children and also enhance childhood education.
