Ghana begins vetting historic diaspora applicants for citizenship ahead of March ceremony

The Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office at the Office of the President have begun the formal vetting process for members of what has been described as the “Historic Diaspora Community” seeking Ghanaian citizenship.

In a statement issued on February 10, 2026, the two institutions announced the commencement of the “Vetting of the Granting of Citizenship for the ‘Historic Diaspora Community’”, marking the next stage in the government’s ongoing diaspora engagement drive.

According to the release, applicants will be scheduled in batches for vetting at the Dubois Centre in Cantonments, Accra, beginning February 11, 2026. The authorities urged applicants to adhere strictly to their assigned dates.

“Applicants for the Historic Diaspora Community will be scheduled in batches for vetting at the Dubois Centre, Cantonments in Accra, starting February 11, 2026,” the statement said.

Officials cautioned prospective applicants against turning up at the venue without prior notification, warning that such actions could disrupt the process.

“Applicants are also advised to wait for notification on their vetting schedule from the Ministry before visiting the centre to avoid overcrowding,” the statement added.

The Ministry acknowledged the scale of interest in the initiative, noting that demand has outpaced the timeline set for an upcoming ceremonial event.

“The Ministry acknowledges that due to the overwhelming number of applicants and the limited time frame for the ceremonial swearing-in scheduled for 5th March 2026, not all interested persons will be able to participate in the process,” it said.

Despite this limitation, the government sought to reassure applicants that the broader citizenship pathway remains open beyond the March ceremony.

“The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office, assures all interested persons that the citizenship process remains open via https://e-services.mint.gov.gh
for registration, and no one will be disadvantaged,” the statement emphasised.

It further reiterated the government’s policy commitment to diaspora inclusion.

“The Government of Ghana is committed to granting Ghanaian citizenship to all qualified applicants as part of its diaspora affairs initiative,” the release stated.

The initiative forms part of Ghana’s sustained effort in recent years to strengthen ties with descendants of the transatlantic slave trade and other historic diaspora communities, building on programmes aimed at reconnecting them to the country through legal recognition and cultural integration.
