Toyota recalls over 142,000 vehicles over doors that could open while driving: See impacted models

Toyota has announced a safety recall affecting approximately 142,000 vehicles in the United States, citing a potential defect that could cause rear doors to open while the vehicle is in motion.

In a notice published on January 28, 2026, from its headquarters in Plano, Texas, the company said the recall covers certain model year 2023 to 2026 Prius vehicles.

According to Toyota, the issue stems from the possibility that water could enter the electric door switches located on the rear doors. Under certain conditions, this may cause a switch to activate unintentionally.

“There is a possibility that certain circumstances can cause water to enter the electric door switches on the rear doors of the subject vehicles and cause a switch to activate,” the company stated.

The notice warned that if the malfunction occurs while the rear doors are unlocked, the consequences could be serious.

“If this occurs while the rear doors are unlocked, a rear door can open while driving, leading to an increased risk of injury to occupants,” Toyota said.

To address the defect, Toyota dealers will carry out modifications to the affected vehicles at no cost to owners. The company said the remedy will involve adjustments to both rear door switch circuits.

“For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will modify the left and right rear door switch circuits to prevent the switch from activating, even if it is shorted, free of charge,” the statement added.

Owners of affected vehicles are expected to be notified by late March 2026. Toyota noted that recall information, including the list of impacted vehicles, is accurate as of the filing date but may be updated.

Motorists have been advised to verify whether their vehicles are included in the recall by visiting Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls and entering their Vehicle Identification Number or licence plate details.

For further enquiries, customers may contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Centre on 1-800-331-4331.

The recall underscores the increasing scrutiny on vehicle safety systems, particularly in modern models that rely heavily on electronic components.
