KsTU inaugurates appeals board to settle grievances

The Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has inaugurated a five-member Appeals Board to address all grievances that threaten the peace on campus and likely to affect academic work.

Members

The board is chaired by lawyer Kwakye Chris of the law faculty of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The rest of the members are Nana Yaa Asante Nnudro, a lawyer with the Lands Commission in Kumasi, Rt Rev. Christopher Andam, the Methodist Bishop, Lawyer Samuel Aryeh of the S. K. Boafo and Associates and Dr Helena Hassan, a retired Librarian.

Mandate

As part of their mandate, the board is to assess all existing and unresolved legal issues at both students and staff levels, offer the best possible advise per the rules and regulations of the university and pronounce judgement.

That, however, does not stop any aggrieved person who may not be satisfied with rulings by the Appeals Board to seek redress at the law courts.

The university has been hit with a number of unresolved legal issues which management thinks could dent the image of the university.

Maiden

The board, the first to be instituted by the university, is also to encourage aggrieved parties to exhaust all internally laid down conflict resolution processes before heading to the law court.

Hard work

The Chairman of the Board, Lawyer Chris, expressed optimism that he and his team will work hard to discourage internal matters from being heard at the law courts.

"As a human institution, conflicts will always arise, but it is the way it is handled that promotes peace," he said.

He commended the university for setting up the board saying it is the right thing to do in order not to unnecessarily infridge on the rights of individuals.

Optimism

The Chairman of the university council, Professor Ben Baffoe-Bonnie, who inaugurated the board, charged them to work within the confines of both the university laws and the general laws governing the country.

He expressed the hope that with the experiences of the members of the board, sanity will prevail on campus.
