Maritime Authority, others support learning of Maths in SHS

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has donated 5,000 corporate branded Mathematics revision textbooks to the Ministry of Education for onward distribution to senior high schools (SHS).

The gesture is part of the authority’s corporate social responsibility in support of the government’s free SHS policy implementation.

Presentation

The Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who received the books on behalf of the service, commended the GMA for the kind gesture and urged other organisations to follow their example.

He said the ministry was concerned about the low scores and failure in Mathematics in senior high schools in the West African Senior High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), hence the need to compile a Mathematics revision textbook which would be ‘student-friendly’ with the aim of improving on the learning and teaching of the subject across the country.

“We want Maths to be enjoyable to students because over the years many students have had the erroneous impression that Mathematics is a difficult subject, resulting in poor performance in it.  “We’re not happy with the results, and if we really want to develop this country then we must make the studying of Mathematics a priority,” he added.

Dr Prempeh also expressed gratitude to the Director-General of the GMA, Mr Kwame Owusu, and presented a plaque to him.

More donations

For his part, Mr Owusu stressed the importance of the subject and pledged the authority’s preparedness to print additional 2,000 copies to ensure that many SHS schools and students obtained copies.

Other organisations also donated copies of the book to the GES. They included the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, the Ghana Revenue Authority and the National Investment Bank.-9
