According to the Volta Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Kofi Abraham, 1051 slabs of compressed dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa, also known as ‘wee’,  were retrieved from 18 fibre sacks when the three were arrested last Friday night.

The largest substance of more than 2000 slabs was concealed in a septic tank.

Lance Corporal Frazer Dafeamekpor, Sergeant Prosper Ametefe of the Keta Division Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and the Nigerian, Uchenna Ubanezim were arrested with 1051 slaps of compressed dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa.

The police said the arrest of the cops, especially, Lance Corporal Dafeamekpor, who was the driver of the vehicle carrying the substance, had come as a shock to the entire Volta Regional Police Command.

That was because, Lance Corporal Dafeamekpor was described as  one of the finest service drivers.

Mr Abraham said the three were transporting the consignment from Ghana to Togo and possibly to Nigeria.

Nigerian contracted Cops

When they were arrested, Mr Abraham said, the two cops reportedly claimed that had gone to arrest the Nigerian suspect, Ubanezim, following a tip-off.

However, in their statement to the police, he said, the two policemen confessed that they were contracted by Ubanezim and one other, who was yet to be identified, to convey the substance to Dzodze for a fee.

Briefing the Daily Graphic about the incident, Mr Abraham stated that at about 11pm on January 9, 2015, the Peki/Juapong highway patrol team informed the Ho municipal patrol team that a Police Nissan Navara pick-up had been spotted loading sacks of substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

The vehicle, with registration number GP 3741, is said to be assigned to the  Volta  Police Training School (RPTS) in Ho.

Unknown to the suspects that the various check points had been alerted to the movement of the vehicle,   the driver failed to stop at the various check points and drove past at accelerated speed.

Based on the information, Mr Abraham said one check point succeeded in intercepting the pick up at Sokode-Lokoe with its occupants.
