20-year spatial development framework for Ashanti Region launched

The Town and Country Planning Department, in conjunction with Spatial Solution Limited, has launched a 20-year spatial development framework for the Ashanti Region.

The framework will help streamline and coordinate various development plans for the region to serve as a guide for investors who intend to invest in the region.

The plan is chiefly purposed to transform the way structural developments are arranged in the region.

In accordance with the framework which is attached to the national plan that was rolled out last year, some areas in the region are to be given priority.

The initial brainstorming sessions involved stakeholders from different groups including traditional rulers, professionals and chief executives of metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.

Unplanned structures

A draft session expected to last for the next two months will address the issue of the sprouting  of unplanned structures and buildings on watercourses.

It will also bring up ways to guide investors to know where to put their money.

The Project Manager of Spatial Solution Limited, Peter Owusu Donkor, said even though the region was already planned, the new development plan would consider the inclusion of road networks and the provision of basic social amenities, among others.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr John Alexander Ackon, said Kumasi remained the most convenient entryway to the northern part of the country and that a well-planned Ashanti Region would facilitate trade and development.

He said badly organised structural planning across the country was a bane of national development and affected the smooth running of development activities.

He charged the planners to ensure that the framework captured the vision and aspirations of the region.
