3,000 government vehicles re-registered

About 3,000 government vehicles have been re-registered by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) as of mid-March 2014.

The re-registration of  the government vehicles was in response to a directive by President John Dramani Mahama that all state vehicles be re-registered to ensure a judicious application of government funds.

The exercise also formed part of the government’s  desire to prudently manage public resources.

So far, about 11 ministries and their departments have had most of their vehicles re-registered  with green-background number plates, a GV prefix, the year  and a code identifying the ministry, department or agency to which they belong.

Some of the ministries are the Ministry of Transport, Youth and Sports, Interior, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Environment Science and Technology, Education and Tourism.

Background

Overall, 15,000 vehicles are expected to be registered at an estimated cost of GH¢1.5 million. There are currently 25 ministries and 10 regional co-ordinating councils.

The exercise, expected to be completed in May this year, will be carried out in all offices of the DVLA across the country and will cover vehicles belonging to ministries, departments, agencies, regional co-ordinating councils and metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.

The re-registration has become necessary following what has been described as gross abuse of state vehicles, particularly at weekends, for events, including funerals and weddings.

Delays

In an interview, the Deputy Director of Vehicle Inspection and Registration, Alhaji Iddrisu Huseni, told the Daily Graphi  that the challenge with the whole exercise was non-compliance on the part of the ministries and agencies with the scheduled periods.

Alhaji Huseni said most of the scheduled first-phase ministries had still not brought all their vehicles for registration.

“Most of the ministries and agencies have had their scheduled periods elapsed and yet unable to register their vehicles,” he said.

However, he said, the DVLA and other authorities were working around the clock to ensure that the ministries complied with the scheduled periods.
