The items, which included baby diapers, detergents, buckets, among others worth GH¢12,000, were presented to the new mothers at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), the Mamobi Polyclinic, the 37 Military Hospital and the Ledzekuku Krowor Municipal Hospital.

Ten mothers from each of the four hospitals, received a package worth GH¢ 400.

The Manager of Accra FM, Nana Apeanti, explained that the decision to reach out to new-born babies and their mothers was to commemorate Mother’s Day, an international day set aside to celebrate women across the world.

He said the initiative was a partnership between Class Media group and other organisations such as Women’s World Banking, Amalena Children’s Haven, Tasty Tom Tomato Paste, Get More Kids Centre, Yazz and Salon Services.

“We thought that once women played a great role in our lives to make us who we are today, it was good to welcome new mothers on a day on which we are celebrating mothers in general. We hope to sustain this initiative and make it an annual event to reach out to more mothers,” he said.

Prompt pre-natal services

At the KBTH, the Principal Nursing Officer at the Maternity Ward, Mrs Gladys Addo, said more than 10 births had been recorded even though she could not give the exact figure since more births were still expected that  day.

She advised pregnant women to always turn up for pre-natal services so that complications could be detected early enough and tackled to prevent maternal and child mortalities.

The Director of Amalena Children’s Haven, Mrs Anita Osei Manu, urged the public to use Mother’s Day as an opportunity to reflect on the numerous challenges women faced, by virtue of their biological make up.

She said it was necessary for women-friendly policies to be rolled out to offer special care and protection to females.
