410 Suspects picked up in police-military swoop

The police and the military have arrested 410 people at Madina and its environs in Accra following a joint pre-dawn operation yesterday.

The suspects — including 60 females — were arrested for various suspected offences.

The ages of the male suspects range between 15 and 40 years, while those of the females are between 18 and 25 years.

Briefing journalists in Accra, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Inspector Kwabena Danso, said the exercise was carried out by a team of policemen drawn from the Operations Unit of the Police Headquarters, the Criminal Investigations

Department (CID) Headquarters and the Operations Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command about 3 a.m. yesterday.

The team was also joined by personnel drawn from the military component of the Operation Calm Life initiative.

He said the operation took place at areas such as Madina, Redco Flats, Reiss Junction and adjoining environs to rid the communities of suspected criminals who attacked and harassed residents and business owners.

Items retrieved from the suspects during the operation included quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and motorbikes.

The team also retrieved some offensive implements, such as daggers and machetes, from some of the suspects.
