5 Communities in Akyemansa demonstrate against bad roads

Inhabitants of five farming communities in the Akyemansa District in the Eastern Region have demonstrated against the state of deterioration of roads in the area.

The communities include Sukuran, Adugyan, Otabil, Mukyia and Boso Villa.

Clad in black and red attires with red bands around their heads, necks and arms, and walking from their various villages amid drumming, dancing and chanting of slogans, they eventually converged on Adugyan where they addressed media practitioners.

According to them, even though they had been voting for previous and current governments since time immemorial, their roads, covering a distance of about 30 kilometres, had been neglected.

They said the last time the roads were reshaped was five years ago, stressing that the long neglect had resulted in the development of manholes on the road, making them almost impassable.

A spokesman for the people, Nana Kwadwo Addison, who is the Krontihene of Mukyia, noted with concern that due to the deplorable nature of the roads, all transport owners had withdrawn their vehicles from the route except only one driver, who charged exhorbitant fares.

He said for that reason, large quantities of foodstuffs and cocoa were locked up in the area.

According to him, in emergency cases where people fell sick at night or women were in labour, they were carried on motorbikes to Akyem Abenase where they boarded vehicles to take them to the Oda Government Hospital for medical care.

Nana Addison claimed that numerous petitions to the Akyemansa District Assembly and the Ministry of Roads and Highways had fallen on deaf ears.

"We will vote massively against the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in the upcoming general election if the roads are not rehabilitated as early as possible," Nana Addison warned.
