5 Ghanaians die on illegal route to US
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration says it has reports five Ghanaians have died on the Panamanian-Colombian border trying to get to the United States of America.
The unnamed five were reported to be among a small group of seven Ghanaians out of a larger group of 35 en route to the United States of America through Panama and Mexico, a statement issued by the ministry Tuesday claimed.
“It is believed that about eighty (80) Ghanaian nationals are still in the forest trying to cross the border from Colombia to Panama with the hope of making it to the United States of America.”
According to the Ministry, many such deaths occur on that illegal route involving Ghanaian asylum seekers making the perilous journey through the forests from Brazil through Colombia, Panama and Mexico.
Those deaths “never come to light.”
The ministry advised travelers to use appropriate and legal means to embark on their journeys, and promised its readiness to provide any would-be traveler advise on how best to proceed so as to avoid putting their lives in grave danger.
