55 Trained apprentices receive working tools

The government has provided working tools for 55 trained apprentices who have successfully completed skills training under the Ghana National Apprenticeship Programme (GNAP) to enable them to set up their own small-scale enterprises.

The apprentices, made up of hairdressers, tailors and seamstresses, carpenters and masons drawn from the Ho municipality, were trained by master craftpersons under a one-year training programme sponsored by the government.

Items presented

They received items such as sewing machines, shovels, hand and standing hair dryers with accessories and other items used by hairdressers, head pans, screw drivers, sets of scissors, firmer chisels and hammers from the National Apprenticeship Board.

The Ho Municipal Technical Vocational Co-ordinator, Mrs Joyce Kugblenu, who presented the items to the beneficiaries,  stated that the apprenticeship programme was very important because it was a way for the government to expand the labour market opportunities for the youth by providing them with relevant experience and market-ready skills to earn a living.

Advice to beneficiaries

She advised them to take advantage of the programme and create business enterprises that would make them self-sufficient.

‘Don’t sell the equipment given to you. Establish your trade and train others as well,’ she said.

She encouraged them to see themselves as fortunate to have received such support, stressing that “these days even those who have acquired degrees from various universities are learning these trades to make  them self-sufficient”.

Using herself as an example, she pointed out that though she was a teacher by profession, she had learnt dressmaking, which brought her additional income.

Mrs Kugblenu stated that there would be frequent visits to the beneficiaries to monitor their activities and also offer them the needed support to keep their businesses running.
