Akufo-Addo expresses solidarity with Kantamanto Market fire victims

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his last State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday expressed sorrow over the devastating fire that tore through the Kantamanto Market in Accra on Thursday. 

The inferno destroyed hundreds of shops, leaving traders devastated.

President Akufo-Addo extended his heartfelt condolences to the affected vendors, and pledged government's support as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.

"I am deeply saddened by the devastating fire at Kantamanto Market, which has ruined the livelihoods of many hardworking traders," said the President.

"My thoughts and prayers are with those affected, and the government stands with you. We will work with relevant agencies to ascertain the cause of the fire and provide the needed support. As a nation, we are united in compassion and solidarity, and together we will extend a helping hand to our fellow Ghanaians in need."

The blaze, which started around 1:00am on January 2, destroyed countless stalls at one of the country’s busiest markets, disrupting the lives of hundreds of traders who rely on it for their daily income.

Firefighters and emergency responders worked relentlessly throughout the day to contain the fire, though the damage was substantial.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, which has sent shockwaves throughout the community. In the meantime, temporary shelters and financial aid are being arranged for the affected traders.

"The government will work closely with local authorities to ensure that measures are in place to prevent such occurrences in the future, and to help those affected get back on their feet," President Akufo-Addo assured.

The Kantamanto Market is a key economic center in Accra, dealing in textiles, electronics, and food items. Its destruction is not only a financial setback for traders but also a significant disruption to the livelihoods of many families.

The President’s address reflects ongoing efforts to provide relief to those affected by the tragedy and underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the recovery process.
